Artist Statement

This body of work focuses on creating interactive wearables that draw from microscopic images of the human body. I’m utilizing brightly colored materials with a variety of textures in order to create playful objects that allow the viewer to explore forms from a world under a microscope. The series starts with a brass locket ring. The ring contains blue acrylic, flocking, and plastic pieces manipulated to look like microscopic bone and bacteria. The next two pieces are lockets on chain that focus more on complex fabrication and color. These lockets are powder coated in gem tones and rely on fibers, resin, and foam to mimic these microscopic forms. The first of these lockets features cellophane and resin panels which mimic interesting surface textures found in microscopic images of the nervous system. The second plays with three magnifications of human muscle. The hinges on this piece allow the wearer to choose which of these panels is showcased, by fastening the panels to the side of the piece.
